I have a confession to make.
Christmas decorations kind of get on my nerves.
There, I said it. Feel free to throw all of your glittery ornaments at me, including the phallic-shaped ones complete with ridges that I just don’t get (gross), and tie me up in a string of twinkling lights—the white ones though, not the multi-colored. I prefer an understated yet classic look.
I actually rather loved our tree this year. The husband picked it out and, I must say, he did good. Though, any tree compared to last year’s red-headed step child of the Charlie Brown tree would be a vast improvement.
It sparkled in the corner for two weeks (we were late putting it up this year because, per usual, school ruins everything), between the fireplace and the husband’s oversized chair that I kind of wish would spontaneously burst into flames.
I adored it until I didn’t—which was exactly two days after Christmas. The tree overpowered the room. My mantel with those lovely silver reindeer was all ‘back up off me!’ and I can’t say I blame it. It all became clutter and too much and I just wanted my house back.
I could only stand about three and a half minutes of Mariah Carey’s Glitter (or Mariah Carey for that matter) and all the glittery things of Christmastime have a short shelf-life too. Decorations are like house guests—it’s nice to have them, but after a bit I just want to walk around braless again.
Thankfully, ornaments aren’t offended by the post-nursing boob sag, but still—you don’t have to go home, but you can’t stay here.
And so, last night, back in the garage it all went. Every last silvery, sparkly, cheery bit of it. And before the New Year, no less. I know; I’m killing everyone’s holiday buzz. I’m charming like that.
G asked me this morning where the tree went and I told her ‘to a kitschy holiday party down the street.’
Parent. of the. year.
Obviously.
When do you take down your decorations?

my family is notorious for christmas decorations. they go up the day after thanksgiving (yes- real tree and all), and stay up for as long as possible. the real tree only comes down when my dad throws a fit about the outpouring of needles. the fake trees have been bedecked in valentines day, st patricks day, and yes- easter decorations in the past.
i'm in my own apartment this year. i've been sick of the tree since the day after christmas, but refuse to take it down til after new years (i don't know why). because i tend to act like a petulant child, i've stopped watering it... just so it knows that it's no longer wanted.
I took our tree down on Christmas...so...I think if anyone is a holiday buzz killer it would be me! haha
This was a compromise in my house this year. We are Catholic, so I like to celebrate the season as it is for religious reasons. Ideally, I would like to put up some decorations the first weekend of Advent, put up the tree about two weeks before Christmas, and leave it all up until the 12th day of Christmas (Little Christmas, Feast of the Epiphany, what have you) on January 6.
However, boyfriend and I compromised that the tree would come down after New Year's (although we're insanely busy this weekend, so it might stay up longer), and we'd put it up a week earlier to balance it out.
Like Jen said, the 12th day of Christmas is the Epiphany, so I have a rule that it stays up until the 6th of January. I have a fake one, so it could stay up all year. I've done it this way for years. K-ster asked me yesterday if the tree is coming down. Is it Jan. 6th, I asked??? Somehow, no other decorations made it down this year, just the tree. I have a snowman collection that isn't holiday oriented, so I usually put them on the mantel and keep them out until the snow stops, in March. They didn't make it onto the mantel and now I don't know if I care.
I have taken down all xmas decorations and put them away EXCEPT the tree, and I am doing that this weekend. My mom guilted me into leaving it up until at least New years....well, and I got lazy and want it to suck the last of the water out of the thing it sits in so my husband doesnt spill it all over the house while trying to take it outside. Sappy water all over is not cool.
I was just thinking that last night. I love my tree but I'm ready to get my house back to normal. I think it just takes too much effort to take down and I haven't even had the energy to put my gifts away yet! lol Usually we have a huge party for nye and have to take the tree down before just to get the furniture back to normal, but this year were not having the party and have no motivation. I hope it's not up till March!
Um.... we took all of our stuff (inlcluding outside lights) about 8 hours after opening presents on Christmas Day. I love love love Christmas, but am usually over it by Christmas Day. :)
Hey! What a great site! You do get around, Ms. Tiffany. Okay, my tree is still up. I'm taking it down tomorrow. I know! Ridiculous. I am so ready for it all to be back in the attic so I can walk around bra-less like you! :)
I'm just going to say it, if you were a man, I would've married you, b/c you're a grump just like my husband.
If I could, I'd leave the tree up all year....no, wait...maybe he's not a grump...I'm just Hispanic.
Sorry. My fault.
You're fine.
Never mind, everybody.
Great post, Tiff. xo
Okay, I love that you quoted "Closing Time." Senior year of college, baby! Yeah!
Great post. The tree is half down as I write this and it's killing me. If that sad little star would fall down on my head right now, that'd be fine.
